Canadian Military Journal
The Canadian Military Journal is the official professional publication of the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence. The Journal is published quarterly in both official languages (English and French) under authority of the Minister of National Defence.
Background
The Canadian Military Journal came into being as a result of Minister of National Defence Douglas Young’s March 1997 Statement to the Prime Minister, which called for a new spirit of openness and communication with the Canadian public and the defence community. In taking measures to increase transparency, responsiveness, accessibility, and accuracy, the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces were directed to increase the public visibility of the Canadian Armed Forces by improving the quality of communications material.
In order to generate further intellectual debate among military professionals, public servants, researchers, academics, students, and Canadians generally, Recommendation #63 of this Statement called for the creation of a departmentally-funded military journal with its own editorial review board. This Recommendation was subsequently approved, and was then given full legitimacy and an operating mandate on 13 May 1999.
Its core mandate, by Ministerial direction, is to enhance the continuing development of the profession of arms in Canada, and, in the transaction of public business, to enhance transparency and to better inform the citizens of Canada and the world about Canadian defence policy issues and initiatives.
The Canadian Military Journal continues to enjoy broad support and an enviable reputation for professionalism and excellence. Through its existence and its editorial policy, it provides balanced and constructive commentary and dialogue on pertinent defence issues.
