CrestSince its creation five years ago, the Canadian Military Journal has grown rapidly, earning national and international respect and readership. I am pleased, as Minister of National Defence, to affirm my support for this important professional forum for the nation’s defence community. By addressing and debating salient issues such as the Responsibility to Protect initiative, NATO transformation and Canada-US defence relations, the journal adds to an informed debate on defence and security issues.

A forum for open debate and free exchange of ideas is essential to the growth and evolution of any profession. The Canadian Military Journal offers such a forum, giving those in the security and defence sector in Canada an opportunity to express their views, propose creative policy solutions, and look to the future. The journal is unique in its diversity of contributors, from the public and private sectors to current and retired Canadian Forces members and professors and students of strategy and defence policy.

The Canadian Military Journal showcases for Canadians the skill and professionalism of the Canadian Forces, their contribution to the defence of Canada and Canadians as well as the contribution they make to international peace and security under difficult and demanding circumstances.

Available on the Internet and in libraries and universities around the world, the Canadian Military Journal is also a messenger of Canadian ethics and values. By addressing critical and relevant issues in a transparent and responsible way, the journal is an example of how the Canadian Forces and Department of National Defence support the Government of Canada in achieving its goal of being a leader on the world stage.

I wish continued success to the Canadian Military Journal, encourage contributions, and look forward to reading future issues.

Bill Graham
